In May 2024, the York Musical Theatre Company enchanted audiences with our production of “The Wizard of Oz” at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre in York from May 22 to May 25.

Under the direction of Kathryn Addison and with musical direction by John Atkin, our cast worked tirelessly to capture the magic of Dorothy’s journey through Oz. Sadie Sorensen led the show as Dorothy Gale, delivering a heartfelt and compelling performance. By her side, Rachel Higgs charmed as the Scarecrow, Zander Fick brought warmth as the Tin Man, and Daan Janssen had audiences laughing as the Cowardly Lion. Jeanette Hunter was a formidable presence as both Miss Gulch and the Wicked Witch, while Elizabeth Gardner brought elegance and grace to Glinda.

A special highlight was our very own Toto, played by Daisy the dog! With the help of her owner, cast member Helen Barugh, Daisy made a delightful entrance before seamlessly transitioning into a skillfully operated puppet handled by Adam Gill.

One of the unique touches we brought to the production was the inclusion of The Jitterbug, a high-energy ensemble number that was cut from the original film. It was a fantastic moment that added an extra burst of excitement to our journey down the Yellow Brick Road.
