OVERVIEW
In November 2021, York Musical Theatre Company presented Hooray For Hollywood at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre in York.
Devised and directed by Paul Laidlaw, this production served as a vibrant tribute to the composers, lyricists, singers, dancers, directors, producers, choreographers, and arrangers who collectively shaped Hollywood’s Golden Age.
The show featured a talented ensemble cast comprising Richard Bayton, Cat Foster, John Haigh, Rachel Higgs, Henrietta Linnemann, and Helen Spencer. Each performer delivered standout solo numbers, contributing to the production’s dynamic and engaging atmosphere.
The repertoire included a mix of love songs, torch songs, and comic numbers from iconic artists such as Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra. Notable performances included Richard Bayton’s rendition of “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” Henrietta Linnemann’s impressive debut, Helen Spencer’s captivating “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” and Rachel Higgs’s touching “Just An In Between.”
The production also featured memorable ensemble pieces like the humorous “Triplets” number and the harmonically rich “Wish Upon A Star,” highlighting the cast’s camaraderie and collective talent.
This performance marked a return to live theatre for YMTC following pandemic-related closures, offering audiences an opportunity to experience the glamour and nostalgia of Hollywood’s golden era.
