SHOW
OVERVIEW

York Musical Theatre Company’s 2022 production of Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical was a bold and captivating interpretation of the timeless tale of good versus evil.
Set in Victorian London, the musical tells the story of Dr. Henry Jekyll, a brilliant but troubled scientist determined to unlock the mysteries of the human soul. In his pursuit of a cure for his father’s mental illness, Jekyll creates a potion that transforms him into the ruthless and monstrous Edward Hyde, unleashing a side of his personality he never knew existed. The production showcased the dark and dramatic themes of identity, moral conflict, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. With a sweeping, emotive score by Frank Wildhorn and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, the show delved into the complexities of the human condition. From the soaring ballads like “This Is the Moment” to the intense, suspenseful numbers such as “Facade,” the music perfectly captured the internal and external battles between Jekyll and Hyde. The cast’s powerful performances brought these complex characters to life, with the actor playing Jekyll/Hyde delivering a masterful portrayal of the character’s transformation, embodying the emotional turmoil and physical metamorphosis with intensity and depth. The production was further enhanced by stunning set designs that evoked the grim atmosphere of Victorian London, while innovative lighting and special effects mirrored the psychological descent of Jekyll as he struggled with his darker side.
