About Us

Who are we?

We are York's longest running amateur theatre company and have been making musical theatre in the city since 1902! In our centenary year in 2002, we changed our name from York Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society to York Musical Theatre Company.

What do we do?

We perform shows and concerts in venues across the city including York Theatre Royal and the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. There are also a range of smaller events, concerts, festive productions, fund-raising and social events which members are involved in.

As one of the leading amateur companies in York we stage a main musical in April/May each year with another theatre production in the autumn.

Is it for me and how do I join?

If you are 16 years or older then why not audition to join the Company?

We hold auditions to ensure that all our members are able to sing in tune! New member auditions are held regularly so please complete the contact form below to find out more details.

We have an annual membership fee, which is payable in full (or instalments) from 1st July each year. A performance fee is also sometimes payable if you are involved in a show. This covers a contribution towards rehearsal costs but most importantly towards the cost of insuring each member for both rehearsals and the performances themselves. We still like to think it's a cheap hobby!
