JOHN ATKIN
MUSICAL DIRECTOR
John Atkin is a seasoned musical director with over 30 years of experience in conducting and musical direction, having participated in more than 100 theatre productions and orchestral concerts, ranging from Sondheim to Sibelius . He has been a key figure in York’s musical theatre scene, notably being involved with York Musical Theatre Company for 25 years.
John’s contributions to York Musical Theatre Company include leading musical direction for major productions such as Jekyll & Hyde The Musical and Sister Act: The Musical at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. He has collaborated with various local theatre companies, including York Opera, where he made his full musical directorial debut with La Traviata.
His dedication to the performing arts extends to community initiatives, such as directing a fundraising concert for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, showcasing his commitment to using music as a force for good.

KATHRYN ADDISON
DIRECTOR
Kathryn Addison is a highly respected director and choreographer within York’s vibrant theatre community, renowned for her imaginative and inclusive approach to musical theatre. A long-standing collaborator with York Musical Theatre Company, Kathryn has helmed numerous productions at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Wizard of Oz, and Sister Act: The Musical.
In her 2023 production of Joseph, Kathryn reimagined the setting to reflect a 1920s–30s Yorkshire farming community, infusing the show with a “Peaky Blinders” aesthetic. She also embraced gender-blind casting, incorporating female performers into traditionally male roles, thereby emphasising talent and character over conventional casting norms. This innovative direction was lauded for its fresh perspective and community engagement.
Kathryn’s passion for theatre extends beyond directing; she has also graced the stage in leading roles such as Miss Babs in Acorn Antiques and Miss Hannigan in Annie, showcasing her versatility as a performer. Her dedication to the arts and commitment to fostering local talent continue to enrich York’s cultural landscape.
